Description

The painting consists of figurative elements: vibrant crockery and pots, windows and houses, and a doll. The doll is a typical object of local artisanry and a recurring subject of popular Lusitanian songs. Furthermore, it was suggested that the doll represents a “Russian woman” and as such it portrays Sonia Delaunay (the Ukrainian/Russian-French painter and designer). Souza-Cardoso has been friends with Sonia and her husband, Robert Delaunay, since their first stay in the North Portuguese seaside resort of Vila do Conde in 1915. This hypothesis may be supported by Sonia Delaunay’s fascination with markets and popular Portuguese art. In addition, to the painting's local narrative, it includes an allusion to the French newspaper "Le Figaro" (the newspaper that was read regularly at the home of the Delaunays), adding a “cosmopolitan” dimension to the visual narrative.
